Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship

The Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship was established by the Hungarian Government for those who live in a Hungarian diaspora outside of Europe and wish to study at a Hungarian higher education institution to develop their personal, professional and cultural relations to Hungary.

The programme aims to support the professional advancement of the scholarship holders with high-quality Hungarian higher education while improving their Hungarian language skills and strengthening their Hungarian identity. After graduation, scholarship holders return to their home country with competitive skills and knowledge that enables them to support their community, preserve Hungarian values and reinforce the relations between the diaspora and Hungary.

Stipendium Hungaricum

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme was established by the Hungarian Government in 2013 to promote the internationalisation of the Hungarian higher education and to attract top students from all around the world. Scholarship holders have an opportunity to not only receive high-quality eduction in the heart of Europe but also experience an exciting student life in an intercultural environment. Besides, two-way mobility allows Hungarian students to spend a part of their study period in partner countries.

When the graduates return to their home countries with marketable skills and knowledge, they can build civil, political and economic relationships, contributing to Hungary’s image and recognition abroad.

Currently nearly 70 sending partners are engaged in the programme on 5 different continents, and the geographical scope of the programme is spreading each year.

Provisions covered by the scholarship

  • Tuition-free education – exemption from the payment of tuition fee
  • Monthly stipend – non-degree, bachelor’s, master’s and one-tier master’s level
  • Accommodation contribution – free dormitory place or a contribution to accommodation costs
  • Medical insurance – health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation

Stipendium Hungaricum Dissertation Scholarship

The duration of the Stipendium Hungaricum Dissertation Scholarship starts in the month following the last month of the semester in which the doctoral student obtains their absolutorium and lasts for the number of awarded months, but no later than the calendar month of the public defense of the thesis. The maximum duration of the SH dissertation scholarship is 8 months. Application procedures will be carried out by the Hungarian higher education institutions and TPF will approve the list of nominated applicants by the end of January 2022. The list of scholarship awardees will be decided by the Board of Trustees of the TPF until the end of August 2022.

Application for the scholarship

All applications shall be submitted through the online application system of Tempus Public Foundation. After registration, the applicants are able to access the application system and upload the required documents.

You can either check the study field provided for your country at the SH website or You can start an application in the DreamApply system and select the relevant study programme.

Each sending partner might have different deadlines and requirements for submitting the application material.

Application is processed in an online application system (apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu). You can browse 29 universities and colleges (more than 600 study programmes), but only 2 choices are allowed. 15th January 2022 is the application deadline. Please make sure that all required documents are attached and all the required fields are filled out properly before submitting your application.

The universities will get in touch with the nominated applicants directly to set a date and conduct the entrance exams from the middle of March until the end of May.

After evaluating the applications and the results of the exams, Tempus Public Foundation (as the coordinator of the scholarship) will inform the applicants of the official results of the applications by the end of June, at the latest.
